Video: Making a traditional relief sign – part 1

Here’s a little something that I work on between other jobs.

Making traditional signs the all traditional way is a very time consuming process. Which means it’s also cost a bit of money, keeping it out of range for most people. But you wouldn’t swim across the river now that they invented the boat right? Same goes for sign making. Traditionally they would cut out each letter in wood by hand, which is obviously very time consuming, most likely taking days. Today we can cut out the letters in vinyl with a laser, in about an hour.

I’m very much into traditional craftsmanship, but not just for the sake of working like they would have in the thirties. I’m not running a historic reenactment project. By laser cutting the letters, I can focus on actually painting the sign, and the price tag of this type of sign comes in a range that is actually payable.

This is the first part of a time-lapse series following the completion of and old style relief sign made with a mix of modern laser cutting technology and traditional sign painting techniques.

New Kustom Kulture Documentary in the works

Damn excited to announce this new project I will be working on. We have been secretly planning and plotting this documentary film for a long time, and now we are about to start filming. Right now you can follow the development on facebook, but as we move along there will be websites, photos, videos, hell! we’ll send up smoke signals when we’re stuck in a desert somewhere.

Dirk Behlau is already on his way to Finland this very moment to do some shooting. In April we head to U.S. for more shooting. All through the summer at various places in Europe, Japan in the winter, and possible more U.S in between.

We will be in contact with artists and builders soon to make shooting arrangements.

FLAKE & FLAMES FILM PROJECT.

“The world famous Kool Lifestyle Photographer Dirk “The Pixeleye” Behlau and the acclaimed Pinstriper and Artist, Jesper Bram join forces on an astonishing adventure to make a documentary Film about the Kustom Kulture movement around the globe.”

Dirk and Jesper will spend a year going from California through Europe and end in Japan in search of the coolest Kustom Kulture people and events on the planet. Picking the brains of living legends, up and coming artists and builders within the culture.

The guys seek out some of the hottest Kustom Kulture spots and get some of the worlds best car and motorcycle builders, tattoo artists, pinstripers, custom painters and pin-up models to share their tricks and experience.

Who are these two morons?

We think we are so cool

Pinstriping is not something that comes easy. It takes dedication and a lot of practice. A little bit of artistic talent, like drawing is not bad either. But before pinstriping became an art form, and before they started using factory applied vinyl. There was guys on the factory floor pinstriping day in and day out. This is how they still do Royal Enfield motorcycles today. These guys are fast and precise like nothing I’ve seen.

Check it out.

AV8 Roadster race car style paint job

lettering on roadster

Just finished the paint job on this AV8 Roadster a couple of weeks ago. I designed everything from the Woodys Speed Shop logo to the lettering and graphics,  according to the customers wishes. All lettering is done by hand using 1Shot and lettering brush. The numbers are clear coated gold leaf.

The car is a mid sixties style race roadster, original 29 steel body, 32 pinched frame, 32 grille, early Chevy V8 with tri power Rochester / Offy combo, early Mehelich wheels.
