Chopper flame job

A classic chopper flame job for Ehlers Performance. Airbrushed and then lettered and outlined by hand. On this job the fat white outlines goes with the piping on the seat. Flames has to have outlines. Even just a very subtle outline, that’s ok. But nothing at all just looks unfinished. Not a ton of clear coat will fix that. Speaking of clear. These photos are from before the objects was cleared. I didn’t handle clear coating on this project, only airbrushing, outlining, and lettering.

Custom Painted Drag Race Helmet

Here’s a helmet I recently finished for a drag racing driver. The team car is a Volvo chassis with a giant Chevy engine in it. That’s why it’s called Crazy Volvo and has a combined Chevy-Volvo logo. I did all design, airbrushing, lettering and pinstriping. The driver basically just gave me a rough sketch of the logo idea, and a photo of the car so that I could see the color scheme, and said surprise me.

South Island Rumble 2010 was a blast. 10 bands in two days, gravel pit racing, very nice car selection, and the best of weather. What more can you ask for. Here’s some of my photos from the meet. The pinstriping and artwork you see in these photos where done by me at the meet.

Here’s some of the projects I finished recently. First a double bass for Frederik from Dead Mens Suit. He wanted something simple, but still very visible. A double bass has so many cool curves you can follow. So it was actually a bit of a challenge deciding which ones to go for. Pinstriping goes really well with musical instruments.

Next up is two panels I finished at the Stripe-O-Rama in Finland. One is purple metalic paint on wood board and a two tone pinstripe design. The other is clear coated wood panel with gold leafed tear drop shapes and a 4 tone pinstriped pattern.

I just got back yesterday from Tampere, Finland where I attended this years Stripe-O-Rama with the Arctic Pinheads. The Stripe-O-Rama is a “panel jam”, and a panel jam is what we “pinheads” call it when we meet up to paint and hang out. A “pinhead” is, not the scary dude in emo clothes from Hellraiser, but another term for a pinstriping artist. So now that we had this speed lesson in Kustom Kulture terms, let’s move on to the pretty pictures. Oh! and by the way “Kustom Kulture” is….erh! well. This is where a massive flood of more weird terms follows and even more explaining would be needed. Let’s just skip that and say it’s a society of something in between cave-painting-virgin-sacrificing-volcano-worshiping cults of cannibals and highly educated technicians spending the better part of their life restoring historic vehicles to mint condition.

One more thing before the artwork pictures. Yet another argument that scientist should get a move on and invent the damn teleporter. Because of a volcanic eruption on island, airspace above Europe was closed down due to ash clouds. Yes, all planes in Europe was grounded, and yes I know it was just a government cover up for an army of UFO’s landing on Earth. But besides that it meant that I had to travel by car to Tampere. That’s a very long drive for a two day stay. But there was no way I was going to miss the show. So please if you know a scientist, kick his/her as back in the lab with the message not to come out without a working teleporter.

Now on to the cool artwork of Stripe-O-Rama 2010.

Lots of talented artists was gathered and the quality of the work created was “Ooosom”, that’s “awesome” in Finnish, which was also the theme of this years show. Here’s some of the photos I shot at the show, there’s more on the facebook page.

New Book Pinstripe Planet 2

Got my hands on a copy of the new book Pinstripe Planet II. The book is totally awesome. Packed to the brim with high quality photos of work from pinstripers around the world. They even put me on the “Artists we would like to thank list” among some massively cool artists like Pekka Wizzz, Platu, Grimb and Doug Dorr. It’s a great encouragement to be among such experienced artists.

Pinstripe Planet 2 is published by Korero Books who publish the most kick ass art books of our time. The books they publish should be on every Kustom Kulture nut’s book shelf.
